The Cutters took on two tough opponents in one day and came away with double wins, proving grit, teamwork, and home-ground pride still matter in regional rugby.BY TOM LILBURNE Cutters secured a memorable double-header victory, overwhelming Tumut Bulls 31-0, before defeating Marcus Oldham College 24-10 in a gruelling day of rugby union action. The home side faced their SIRU competition match against Tumut Bulls at 12.30pm, with the mountain visitors representing the furthest team in the grade. Despite having the option to forfeit and focus on the evening's clash against Marcus Oldham College, Cutters voted overwhelmingly to tackle the challenging double-header with just four hours between games. The opening half against Tumut started slowly as both sides struggled to establish rhythm. Neither team could build momentum with ball possession, hampered by scrappy play and vocal Bulls players. With Cutters missing several key players, many boys played out of position while low communication created a disjointed performance. The scoreboard threatened to remain blank for both sides until late in the half when Angus Helps, returning from suspension, made a galloping break down the sideline and crossed for a well-deserved try. Once Cutters broke the stalemate, momentum shifted decisively in their favour. A stern halftime discussion from Ed Lilburne and Matt Ireson clarified the game plan and addressed mistakes. The team that emerged for the second half displayed a completely different attitude and energy. Glen Nadin proved most valuable after arriving late and watching the first half from the sideline. He identified the missing elements and came on firing in the second half, bringing the energy Cutters desperately needed. The forwards improved their ball handling significantly, enabling the backs to spread play wide to the outside backs who crossed the line consistently. Tom O'Rafferty gained massive metres down the sideline, supported by Oli Cameron who delivered another stellar performance at fullback. Cameron's evolution from his former wing role was evident, as he helped young apprentice Jack Shand build confidence on the wing. Together they retained possession and broke Tumut's defensive line after numerous long kicks downfield. Cameron crossed the line alongside Digby Lilburne, who despite missing his regular centre partner Harry Agar, worked effectively with Andrew Garvey. Garvey smartly drew in Tumut defenders, creating space for Lilburne to crash through the line. The final try came from Will Nadin, who earned his score with an excellent break through the middle. The Tumut defence couldn't lay hands on the elusive and determined footwork of the man of the match. Mel Graham deserves special mention for stepping into the number 10 jersey for the first half, delivering several excellent kicks downfield for field position that nearly converted to tries. The veteran also showed his love for gutsy one-on-one tackles in defence. Rupert Lilburne emerged as one of the day's best forwards, showing great leadership when communication was lacking. He stepped up to lead by example, spearheading the defensive effort that rallied his teammates. Final score: Cutters 31 defeated Tumut 0. Following the Tumut victory, the boys rested for several hours while watching the women's netball (Marcus's victory) and second XV rugby (Cutter's victory) before the much-anticipated first XV clash against Marcus Oldham College. After last year's defeat that saw the trophy travel south to Geelong for the first time in its history, Cutters were eager to see it returned to Hay. With much the same team that faced Tumut, the stiff and sore side assured each other there would be no excuses, and this would prove as good a performance as any despite the quick turnaround. The opening 15 minutes proved incredibly tough as Cutters discovered this inexperienced group of agricultural students were tough, drilled and determined. After little progress, Cutters finally found their answer through forward Nature Karatau-te Kuru, who made a blitzing run through Marcus's forwards and crashed over the line. With the score only slightly favouring Cutters at halftime, uncertainty remained about which way the pendulum would swing. The much fresher Marcus side was ready to go while the stiff Cutters team was keen to make a statement with the double victory. In the second half, with the crowd stretching from try line to try line, the atmosphere couldn't have been higher. A great half of football saw Marcus get points on the board after a well-earned try, working the ball downfield before their winger converted. Cutters retaliated with three tries throughout the half. In the final 10 minutes, Marcus were punished by huge hits from the lethal shoulders of Andrew Garvey and Digby Lilburne. To Marcus's credit, they kept bringing the ball up hard through some gutsy forwards, with one nearly finishing Hugo Fraser who was steamrolled by their monster forward. With the game set for a Cutters victory, Marcus finished with a great play in the final moments. They worked the ball well in Cutters' 22 and scored a try in the game's final play. Central Rivers AFL has handed down recommendations to wind up the Golden Rivers Football and Netball League (GRFNL). The Northern Futures Project was commissioned by the Central Rivers Leagues Board to address sustainability concerns affecting football and netball competitions in the region. The project ran from November 2024 to May 2025, and the board says it involved extensive consultation with clubs across both the Central Murray Football Netball League (CMFNL) and GRFNL. Currently Hay Lions fields AFL and netball sides in the competition, alongside Ultima, Macorna, Murrabit, Moulamein and Wandella. Ultima Roos applied to move to the Central Murray league in 2024, which prompted the review. Hay Lions President George Auldist said the club is weighing up their options. “The Hay Lions club are currently assessing the best options for the Golden Rovers league and our club,” he said. “We will discuss and vote with our club members.” In a statement released to the media Central Rivers say they have the support of AFL Central Victoria, in handing down the recommendation to wind up GRFNL.“These recommendations aim to preserve the spirit of local footy and netball while ensuring we’re building something viable and exciting for generations to come,” Northern Futures Project Committee Chair Stuart King said.“Change is never easy, however the time has come where decisive action must be taken."The recommendations handed down by the review team are: 1.That 2025 be the final season of the GRFNL providing an opportunity to celebrate its history during the 2025 finals series. 2.That GRFNL clubs, consistent with AFL Victoria Transfer Regulations, individually consider transferring to a league either within or outside of the Central Rivers region where they can compete sustainably, and that specific to this review an exemption to current AFL Victoria transfer deadlines be sought on behalf of transferring clubs. 3.That clubs explore amalgamation opportunities which can maintain the geographic footprint of football and netball and participate in a league where they can compete and be sustainable. 4.That the CMFNL expand by accepting club transfers which can value add to the league, which are considered capable of competing and being sustainable, and acknowledging that any participation criteria or developed minimum standards will become applicable to all new and existing clubs 5.That the region considers all transfer and amalgamation propositions individually whilst recognising that a collaborative approach with neighbouring leagues is necessary 6.That the operational and functional model of an expanded league should not be an obstacle to immediate decision making, and consideration should be given to: a. CCSP (sustainability) consideration (Player Points and Player Payment Caps) b. Finals modelling c. Number of Home and Away games 7. Relevant regional league Boards should collaborate with AFL Central Victoria to ensure any proposed regional restructure be considered sustainable, viable and within regulatory limits. 8. Should no acceptable 2026 model be achieved, that the GRFNL continue with a minimum of four clubs for 2026 only (as a transitional arrangement).

Despite getting a try back through Tilly Heath, Williams scored her second in the second half before a bad injury to Tiarra Hardwick ended the game early, the Hens finishing ahead 14-4.Goolgowi and Hillston were both winless after two rounds and desperate to get one up with only two women’s rounds left. Poor discipline from both sides and good defence meant only one try was scored in the first half, to Goolgowi’s Daniel Brown, along with a penalty to Toby Hams. Hams kicked another penalty in the second half but no more points would come. The Rabbitohs registering their second win, 8-0. Hay Lions will need to find a new leagueHay Lions Football and Netball Club will need to seek a new competition, after recommendations to dissolve the Golden Rivers Football and Netball League (GRFNL) were handed down on Wednesday evening.The Central Rivers board has recommended the wind up of GRFNL at the end of this season. The Central Rivers board ruled GRFNL will continue in 2026 only if other homes for clubs cannot be found, and with a minimum of four teams.The decision follows the request last season by Ultima Roos to move to the Central Murray League.This leaves remaining GRFNL clubs Macorna, Murrabit, Hay, Moulamein and Wandella to either seek join Ultima and move to Central Murray, or join other surrounding competitions such as Loddon Valley or Picola District.Hay Lions compete in the GRFNL, which was founded in 1919, and the senior AFL side is currently sitting in first place on the ladder.Balranald Roos already compete in the Central Murray League, prompted questions about who will retain the Roos moniker.

Group 20 Rugby League has advised clubs that the proposed Magic Round has been postponed until 2026. The event was planned for June 21 at Wade Park Yenda, when the Group proposed all clubs and grades would play on one day, raising concerns around Yenda’s facilities. The Group has said their inaugural Magic Round will be slated for round one next year.

On Sunday, Hay players travelled to Bendigo to take part in the Central Victoria Netball Association netball tournament at Red Energy Stadium.They played in Golden Rivers Interleague teams across the Under 13, 15 and 17 age groups.The 13s had a mixed day, finishing fourth on the ladder with three wins, three losses and one draw.The team worked well across all areas of the court.Emma Brown played in centre, wing defence and goal keeper. In centre, she worked hard to link defence to attack with consistent leads and strong passes.In wing defence, she applied pressure on the opposition's wing attack and helped force turnovers. When moved into goal keeper, she defended well under the post and was effective at rebounding missed shots.Grace Auldist played a solid game in goal defence, sticking closely to her opponent and contesting every ball.She also had a turn in centre, where she helped drive the ball down the court and supported both ends with steady passing.The 15s had a strong performance, winning nine out of 11 and making it through to the grand final, where they were narrowly defeated.Evie Creighton played most of the day in wing defence.She kept close to her opponent, slowed down their attacking play and picked off several intercepts through the middle third.Hannah Jamieson played goal attack, combining well with her goal shooter.She moved well around the ring, created space and converted her shots reliably.Poppy Barnes played in wing attack.She delivered accurate feeds into the circle and helped transition the ball quickly from defence into attack, with strong drives and quick decision-making.The 17s faced tough competition, finishing the day with one win from 10 games.Emily Taylor played the full day in wing attack. She worked hard on the transverse line, gave reliable options for centre passes and delivered accurate balls into the goal circle under pressure.The players will return to Bendigo in two weeks for another full day of games.Each team will be looking to build on their performances and continue developing their combinations on court.

Group 20 unveils plans for a Magic RoundGroup 20 Rugby League has unveiled plans on social media, for the first ever Magic Round for the competition. Group 20 is yet to release any detail around the concept, which would see all clubs play at the one venue.The date has been set for June 21 at Wade Park, Yenda, raising questions from fans as to the suitability of the sites changerooms and toilet facilities.Comments on social media include concerns to the disruption of the existing ProTen Community Cup, which is played on Saturdays and often features payers from Group 20.Back Country Bulletin believes that league tag and juniors will be played at a separate venue, with reserve and first grade games to commence from 10am. Lake Boga dominates across football and netball, despite Balranald’s determined start in senior grades.Despite valiant efforts from the Balranald Roos across all grades, Lake Boga made a commanding clean sweep when they travelled to Greenham Park for Round 8 action on Saturday.The senior match provided the day's most entertaining contest, with the Roos showing tremendous fight in the opening half. Round two of the ProTen rugby league competition delivered thrills, spills, and some eye-watering scorelines as teams find their rhythm for the 2025 season.The Barellan Rams made their home ground a fortress on the weekend, claiming convincing victories in both the men's and women's fixtures against visiting Rankins Springs. But it was Goolgowi who stole the headlines with an absolute demolition job that left Deniliquin shell-shocked.Barellan's men side set the tone early, running out comfortable 24-six winners over Rankins Springs. The star of the show was winger Mesulame Navakayala, who crossed the stripe three times in a dominant display. Noah Forbutt chipped in with a try of his own and was near-perfect with the boot, slotting four goals to seal the victory. Rankins Springs' lone bright spot came through Jamie Parsons' try, with Damian Walker adding the extras.Meanwhile, Ivanhoe continued their impressive start to the season with a 20-10 triumph over Narrandera. The visitors spread the joy around, with tries to Ethan Harris, Tarelle Jones, Zac O'Neill, and Lachie Brill. Patty Miller was reliable with the boot, converting two attempts. Narrandera fought hard through tries from Joey Charles and Barlow Simpson, but it wasn't enough to prevent the defeat.However, the match of the round belonged to Goolgowi, who absolutely dismantled Deniliquin 54-2 in a performance that will have other teams taking notice. Henry Taylor was unstoppable, bagging a hat-trick while also nailing seven conversions for a personal haul of 26 points. Brother Ollie Taylor wasn't far behind with two tries of his own, while Jasvir Singh-Clark also grabbed a double. Jake Wynn and Anthony Star rounded out the scoring feast for the rampant home side. Deniliquin's only response was a penalty goal from Bede Orr in what will be a result they'll want to forget quickly.The women's competition took on a completely different complexion, with both matches decided by watertight defensive displays and clinical finishing.Barellan's women continued their strong start to the season with a 10-0 shutout victory over Ivanhoe. Sophia Kelsey provided the match-winning moment with the game's only try, while Monique Higgins was spot-on with the conversion. It was a grinding affair that showcased the defensive capabilities of both sides.In the other women's fixture, Rankins Springs bounced back from their men's disappointment with a solid 10-0 win over Goolgawi. Tilly Heath and Tiarra Hardwick both found the line for the visitors, with Hardwick also adding the goal in a well-rounded individual performance.With Hillston enjoying the bye this round, they remain perched atop the men's competition ladder. However, Barellan and Ivanhoe are breathing down their necks, both maintaining perfect records through two rounds. Perhaps most surprisingly, last year's grand finalists Narrandera find themselves languishing outside the top four as the 2025 season gathers momentum.In the women's league, Barellan have staked their claim as early premiership favourites, sitting pretty at the summit. Rankins Springs have moved into second place with their first win of the campaign, setting up what could be an intriguing battle for top spot as the season progresses.The varying scorelines across both competitions suggest we're in for an entertaining year, with some teams already establishing themselves as genuine contenders while others will be looking to regroup and find their feet in the coming weeks.

BY JAMIE PARSONS Ivanhoe Roosters hosted round one of the 2025 ProTen Season on Saturday. The Ivanhoe side took the opportunity to hold their Indigenous Round with Welcome to Country performed by Sharon Kennedy, a smoking ceremony and limited-edition playing kit. The distinctive jerseys worn by the Roosters and Hens were designed by Carolyn Williams, and auctioned off after the game.For the second year in a row heavy rain in the days prior to kick off forced many buses to detour through Hay and up the Cobb Highway, with Mossgiel and Booligal roads closed. Round one proved to be largely uneven with some big scores including the biggest margin in the men’s competition so far. Women’s games Barellan started the season fast, in what has become a tradition for them, with a 46-4 win over Hillston. The Bluebirds numbers have been tremendous in the pre-season which is a vast improvement from 2024, when they were often short. Barellan started quickly, with three tries early, before Hillston pegged one back. The second half was all the Rams. Sophia Kelsey, Sophie Taylor and Tommi Booth all scored doubles, as the Rams go to top of the table again.The home side Ivanhoe Hens made a good account of themselves, with a 34-10 win over Goolgowi, despite several Barellan girls backing up for the short Goolgowi side. Ivanhoe started well, managing to keep Goolgowi out early, until confusion over the two-in-the-tackle rule led to Aleeysha Munday scoring for the Rabbitohs. Ivanhoe dominated the rest of the game with Falesiu Chauncy-Moli scoring two tries, and Shailyn Williams posting 18 points from two tries and five goals.Men’s gamesDeniliquin will face many big road trips for their first season in ProTen, but round one had many clubs facing the same thing. Hillston managed the trip a lot better than the new boys, with three tries scored early, before each side had one player each sent off after a melee. Hillston managed being a man down best with a full bench, while Deni only had two interchange players, and a couple of Narrandera boys filling in. Goolgowi’s Henry Taylor backed up for the Bluebirds and ran riot in the second half scoring four tries, while fullback Jed Webster kicked nine goals.Narrandera came into round one over a bit short with some Deni boys returning the favour, and filling in on the bench. Barellan looked good early on, but could not capitalise despite one try to captain Noah Forbutt. Jamaine Jones went through the middle to bring Narrandera level, before quick hands through the backs had Jahrel Tereva over in the corner for the Lizards to take the lead. A break from a kick return by Fred Herrmann put Forbutt over again for the Rams to lead at the break. Their run continued and Barellan ran over the top of an injury-decimated Narrandera to win 28-10. The Ivanhoe and Goolgowi late game took a while to get going, with strong defence dominating the early exchanges, until Ethan Harris managed to get over in the corner. Phillip Hunter scored on the other sideline soon after, for the Roosters to go in 8-0 at the break. The second half was a similar story - despite poor discipline from Ivanhoe giving Goolgowi numerous penalties on the tryline, the Ivanhoe defence held strong.
