Huge change to Western Riverina competitions as foundation club set to re-join Group 20
Huge change to Western Riverina competitions as foundation club set to re-join Group 20

22 July 2025, 8:00 PM

The rugby league scene in the Western Riverina is set for another major change in 2026 after the Narrandera Lizards applied to re-join the Group 20 competition next season.BY TALLON SMITH After seven successful years in the Proten Community Cup and 22 years since their exit from the Group 20 competition, Narrandera officials decided upon the much-speculated change, with a meeting to take place between the club, NSWRL, Group 20 and the ProTen Cup in the coming weeks. Lizards President Shaun Lyons said that the club decided, after years of losing junior players to other clubs and sports in the area, to offer a pathway into full-season first division football.“[At] the last Group 20 meeting, the Lizards made a decision to put our letter of expression of interest out for the Lizards to return to Group 20 in 2026,” he said.“I think it's time for us to make that move." “We have strong juniors coming through, our junior committee does a great job, great numbers, we've got to give these kids somewhere to go."“I think we've achieved a fair bit in ProTen, we won a few Premierships, lost a couple as well." “I just think it's time for Narrandera as a club and as a community to go back to Group 20, and all reports are that there has been a good response.”Following in the footsteps of the Hay Magpies almost two decades ago, the Lizards will make the step up to the Group-level competition via Reserve Grade, with a view to re-establishing a first-grade presence later once the foundations have been built.“Group 20 has a plan that we go back to Reserve Grade,” Lyons said.“We're hoping to get a women's team, under 18s, and, obviously, it depends on what the 16s are doing, but we hope the 16s can come along and play for Narrandera.“So we're hoping to put four teams in next year, but that's not set in stone yet."Despite forming an integral part of the tight-knit ProTen Cup community alongside the other six clubs, Lyons said that the Lizards have enough support to sustain a return to the larger of the two Western Riverina competitions.“We have great support from our local town, and I think when we return back [to Group 20], I think our support is going to be twice as much,” he said.“[It’ll mean] rugby league in the town, week in, week out, and I think it's only going to be better for us.”As for the club’s home ground, Lyons said the Lizards are looking to remain at the Narrandera Sports Ground and ground-share with their stablemates, the Narrandera Imperial Australian Rules Club.“We have a good association with [the Eagles],” he said.“Sometimes it doesn't always work out, [but] we’ve just got to work together and alternate weekends.”“We've done it in the past. "“I remember when I was playing with junior football there, and senior football there. It always worked. “There was no disagreement, so I think that will be pretty easy.”Formed in 1921, Narrandera was a founding member of Group 20 in 1954 and competed in every season until going into recess after their 1999 premiership win. After joining Group 17 for a season after the turn of the century, the Lizards returned to Group 20 in 2003 and 2004, only to go into extended recess beginning in 2005.The club then entered into an ill-fated joint venture with local rivals Yanco-Wamoon from 2012 to 2014, competing in Group 20 as the Hurricanes, before entering the Proten Community Cup in 2018 after the Hawks decided to return to being a standalone club three years prior.Narrandera has won three premierships in Group 20 throughout its history, in 1986, 1991 and 1999, in addition to their two Proten Cup titles in 2022 and 2023.

2025 dual minor premiers the Barellan Rams women’s and men’s squads will enjoy a week off, after winning both major semi finals and catapulting directly into the grand final of the ProTen CupBoth Ivanhoe Roosters women’s and men’s teams lost their matches, and will meet Rankins Springs and Narrandera in the preliminary final, next week, at home at Sahara Oval. The all-female refereeing team of Savera Tanuvasa, Mischa Papendrea and Lusiana Isaia made history, as the first female officiated game in ProTen’s history. The Roosters men’s side went down in a nail-biter, with the Rams closely snatching the two-point win, in front of the Barellan home crowd. In contrast, Narandera Lizards easily accounted for Rankins Springs, in a dominating win, with Kane Simpson crossing for two tries. Ivanhoe will need to dig deep to overcome the Lizards recent good form.In the women’s matches Hillston bowed out of the running, after going down by six points to Rankins Springs. Ivanhoe Hens loss to Barellen means they now meet the Rankins Springs Dragons, and will be hoping the Sahara Oval advantage will tip the game in their favour. The Rams Madison Morris scored a hat trick of tries in the dominate win.Men’s resultsBARELLAN 18 (Luke Farmer, Rodney Gibbs, Noah Forbutt tries, and 3 goals)IVANHOE 16 (Patty Miller, Shaun Aylett, Ethan Harris tries, Patty Miller 2 goals)NARRANDERA 34 (Kane Simpson 2, Caleb Atkinson, Malek Afuamua, Thomas Lyons, Shane Nayden tries, Jakeem Morgan 5 goals)RANKINS SPRINGS 6 (Jack Glyde try, Damian Walker goal)Women’s resultsBARELLAN 24 (Madison Morris 3, Sophie Taylor tries, Monique Higgins 4 goals)IVANHOE 6 (Amber Evans try, Shailyn Williams goal)RANKINS SPRINGS 10 (Georgia West, Talesha Garbuio tries, Terri-Ann Martin goal)HILLSTON 4 (Leah Rudman try)

"The best the Lions have played all season"BY HAY LIONS FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUBThe Lions were comprehensive winners against the Macorna Tigers in round 10 of Golden Rivers league 2025 season. The win was set up by a blistering 10 goal opening quarter that had the Tigers reeling. The focus pre-game was on skill execution and the Lions delivered in spades. After a long-range opener from Daniel Stewart in the first minute of the game, the Lions took control and never looked back. With options presented everywhere, goal scorers came from across the board, with mids, forwards and wing side players all getting a piece of the action. Each quarter had its own highlight reel but it was no surprise that forward craft expert Declan Watson starred in the second, kicking five to take his half-time total to seven.Despite a half-time score against them of 110 to a solitary point, the Tigers showed grit to kick the first three goals of the third, to temporarily halt the onslaught. However, with the last five goals to the Lions, any inroads made by the Tigers against the mounting scoreline were quickly nullified.Dean Aylett pulled the trigger in the third, snagging three in a row in a purple patch – it seemed he had the ball on a string on his way to a career-best five goal haul. The spotlight shone on Jack Headon in the last quarter, slotting four of his own, while still playing a pivotal goal assist role.Posting seven in the bag and 19 score involvements, it was a big day out for the dynamic forward.Commentators agreed it was the best the Lions have played all season.Energy and talk was high game. Pressure was suffocating and the Tigers could not move the ball without being severely punished on turnover. The forwards were back to their dangerous best. Decision making was spot on, as was work rate in front and behind the ball. With options everywhere, the Lions pulled the Tigers apart.Final score: Hay 33:13-211 Macorna 4:3-27Coaches top six: Dean Aylett, Jaco Watson, Jack Cattanach, Ferg Cattanach, Jack Headon, Harry Loughnan.Outstanding Individual PerformancesJack Cattanach was simply superb. With 26 touches in the last quarter, Catta's numbers were off the chart.65 possessions, that included 20 goal involvements, 17 clearances and 11 tackles, earned Cattanach a mammoth 332 ranking points on his way to breaking the premier data record.Tough, clean, and classy, inside and out, it is difficult to keep finding the superlatives to describe the impact he has on any given game.Dean 'Hulk' Aylett's game was unbelievable. It is a tough position to play half forward flank, but everything he touched turned to gold.Hulk's lead up and marking, decision making, delivery inside 50 and finishing in front of goals was outstanding. His evasiveness was back to its best and no one could lay a hand on him.Jacob Watson was everywhere. At the bottom of packs, cleaning up in defence and kicking 4 goals was testament to his work rate. All class, Ferg Cattanach was Mr Consistent again in every quarter. Reliable and critically important for the Lions defensively both at stoppage and down back, his link up play and transition game going forward continues to be impressive.Jack Headon's game was close to flawless. 31 disposals for a deep forward that included 17 marks, and seven goals was outstanding. His link up play up the ground, and his unselfish delivery inside 50 that brought others into the game demonstrates his growth as a phenomenal young player. This was Harry's Loughman second excellent performance in a row. His defence first approach to beat his man and then spread into attack, gave the Lions another dimension, and the team more options down back.Justin 'Brolga' Ellis played a pivotal role up forward, not only kicking five goals, but he used his experience to straighten up the team all game.In giving Hay another long target option to kick to, his on-field presence brings more danger to the forward line.Hay Lions will hit the road on Saturday to meet Murrabit.

Lakeside losses for Hay Magpies
Lakeside losses for Hay Magpies

17 July 2025, 5:00 AM

It was a tough road trip for Hay Magpies men's sides on Sunday, when they met Tullibgeal Lakes United (TLU) Sharks on their home ground field beside Lake Cargelligo. The Magpies reserve grade side conceded their first loss of the season, after a shocker of a first half.Handling errors and soft penalties peppered the Hay performance, and at half-time the Magpies trailed by 16 points.Without the experience and direction of James McLean, Lloyd Schulz and Shayne Kennedy coach Zac O'Neill said it contributed to the first half disappointment."We had too much negativity out on their field and too many people talking," O'Neill said after the match."The chat in the sheds afterwards was good, so we'll be ok. We will just pick up and go again.""The positive to come out of it was the comeback."After the restart Hay fought back to come within two points of the Sharks, who held off to take the win.Forwards Luke William and Phil Hunter made some punishing runs, and Zane Gash was outstanding in both defence and attack.Patty Miller came under pressure by the Sharks bombing kicks and heavy tackling style.John Weymouth's gritty performance led to Hay's first points, when his progression sent Tyrelle Jones across the line. Jack Bolger's always impressive defensive effort lifted another notch in the second half and Lote Clark played out another strong game – Clark built on his solid performances in past weeks. The experience of hooker Jermaine Dixon and Quinton Plum made the difference in Hay's comeback and Jesse Thompson continues to impress. His award was worthy recognition of his notable efforts. The conversion kicking skill of Ryan Gash, who booted four from four in challenging, blustery conditions, kept the Magpies in contention.Unfortunately for Hay the clock ran out on their efforts to break ahead, and the loss sees the Magpies slip to second place on the ladder behind, Griffith Waratahs.Final score: Hay 24 (Tries: Tyrelle Jones, Phil Hunter, Dylan Lund, Zane Gash. Goals: Ryan Gash 4) TLU 30.Awards: Player's player Ethan Harris. Coaches award Jesse Thompson.First Grade StrugglesThe first-grade side was similarly outplayed and was missing key players in Jock Crighton and Simon Parr.An injury to Harley Hey early in the second half added to the Magpies woes – he had made some punishing runs into Sharks territory before being taken from the field. The Sharks scored first early in the game, putting Hay on notice that they were making every effort for their small hometown crowd. They attacked again but were halted by the efforts and speed of Toby Whitehead. It has become almost expected but the non-stop labours of Hugh Crighton were impressive. He routinely made back-to-back tackles and was threatening with every run of the ball.Ben Arandt had some solid runs but was most dangerous when he drew defenders before targeting well timed passes.Zane Gash played his second game of the day and partnered with Shaun Aylett to deliver heavy hitting defence. At half-time Hay trailed by 12 points, with Whitehead the Magpies only try scorer.Rex Anare and Will Barens posted some weaving runs, and Anare, Aylett and Arandt each crossed to bring Hay within eight points of the hosts.TLU was not to be deterred and in the final minutes of the game crossed twice to seal the win.Final score: Hay 20 (Tries: Toby Whitehead, Rex Anare, Shaun Aylett, Ben Arandt. Goals: Ben Taylor 2) TLU 38.League Tag SuccessThe day started well for Hay when the Magpies league tag side played out a grinding four-point win over the Sharks.Without Hannah Stewart, who was unavailable, Hay forwent the usual kicking game and instead spread the ball wide across the line to pound out the important win.At marker, Zoe McRae was busy all game, and Lily Weymouth continued to lead from the front. Wendy Gonevulavula's speed kept the Sharks on their toes, and an intercept by Casey Thomson at a vital time in the first half kept the hosts from scoring. As the only Hay side with a full roster of players this week, the league tag side were served well by Noa Magliocchetti from the bench. The attacking style of Monica Andrews and youngsters Lily Plum and Larissa Sorensen was valuable in such a tough game.Karly Fisher broke the line in the second half and raced the length of the field to pull Hay 10 points ahead, but the Sharks posted a late consolation try.Final score: Hay 10 (tries: Wendy Gonevulavula, Karly Fisher. Goal: Karly Fisher) TLU 6.

Only Goolgowi in 2021 has won both women’s and men’s minor premierships before, and for the Ram’s men’s side, it is their best finish since the start of the ProTen Cup. Match results - Women’s Games Hillston started the better in their clash with Ivanhoe with a runaway 80 metre try to Mel Nilsen. They kept pace with Ivanhoe until the half, but the Hens strength won out in the end, coming home with three tries in the second half to win 18-4.Barellan already had the minor premiership wrapped up but sure wanted that undefeated record to stay intact. Rankins Springs kept them out early but later three tries to strong runner Lina Smith had them up 18-0 at the break. The Dragonettes fought back in the second half and kept the Rams scoreless for a time, but two tries in the last three minutes blew the score out a bit to 30-0.Ivanhoe 18 (Rachael Burns, Aimee McGuckin, Hannah Whyman, Natalie Johnson tries; Rachael Burns goal) Hillston 4 (Mel Nilsen try)Barellan 30 (Lina Smith 3, Sophie Taylor 2 tries; Monique Higgins 5 goals) Rankins Springs 0 Match results - Men’s Games Ivanhoe needed a big win to secure a top 2 finish and a home final, Hillston needed a win just to stay alive. The Roosters started the better and dominated field position but Hillston kept in the hunt with a try to Lachie Brill. An Ivanhoe send-off at halftime kept Hillston in the game, but the 12-men Roosters got over the top in the end, winning 26-10.Deniliquin needed some fill-ins to make a side for their last game, with the season taking a toll on their players. Barellan took a while to get going, but shifted gears quickly once they got their first try. After a 24-0 halftime lead, the game was over before fulltime when the Rams reached 60, with Noah Forbutt scoring three tries and nine goals, with 50-gamer Reece Wilson kicking the last one.Rankins Springs had to win by more than 18 to get back into second spot, and started the worst way possible with Narrandera jumping out to a 20-0 lead after bashing the Dragons forwards early. Dominating possession the Lizards only let in one try in the first half, up 26-6. In the second half two intercept tries against the run of play put the result beyond doubt, before the Dragons fought for pride on their home turf and got back into it, scoring three tries late to make the score 42-22. Ivanhoe 26 (Ethan Harris, Phillip Hunter, Thomas Lee, Tarelle Jones, Shaun Aylett tries; Tarelle Jones 3 goals) Hillston 10 (Steven Awali, Lachie Brill tries; Brayden Davis goal)Barellan 60 (Noah Forbutt 3, Darcy Payne 2, Fred Herrmann, Tom Bartter, Neil Halden, John Dietrich, Fred Baker tries; Noah Forbutt 9, Reece Wilson 1 goals) Deniliquin 0Narrandera 42 (Caleb Atkinson 2, Jakeem Morgan, Bodean Tereva, Bernie Simpson, Malek Afuamua, Brayden Stewart, Jack Cooper tries; Jakeem Morgan 5 goals) Rankins Springs 22 (Jason Cronin, Jack Glyde, Tom Power, Billy Overall tries; Damian Walker 3 goals)

A Tough Day in Wagga Cutters vs Reddie
A Tough Day in Wagga Cutters vs Reddie

16 July 2025, 5:00 AM

On Saturday Cutters travelled to Wagga to face Wagga Reddies. By Hugo FraserWith many players out, it was a very different Cutters side that took to the field, with most playing out of position. Hay just scraped through to make a 15-man team. On the muddy oval, Cutters did what they did best and found their feet, and patiently chipped away at the much more reinforced Reddies side.Hay Cutters put the first points on the board when Will Brown crossed the line after rolling phases from the forwards. With Harry Agar away, Brownie was also the conversion kicker for the day, converting his own try. Reddies were far from out, and they hit back, to score. At half-time the score was 7-5 in the Cutter’s favour. With no reserves to call upon, the muddy 15 men returned to the field in the second half and gave it their all. Will Brown again crossed to take the lead out to 12-5. Reddies pelted the Cutters line non-stop for 15 minutes. Unfortunately for Reddies the Cutters defensive line refused to give an inch, even when star forward Sam O’Leary was removed from the field with a deep gash to the head. Unable to replace Sam, the Cutters fought the final 10 minutes with 14 players. A god’s grace was given with a full arm penalty to Hay, which was used to convert into three points taking the lead to 15-5 giving some breathing room. The Reddies again hit back and scored, bringing the match to a close 15-12. With the game victory in the balance, and the referee not doing any favours for Hay, a gripping final five minutes play ensued. It was a stoic effort from the Cutters to hold Wagga out in their 20 metre line, to see the game out and take the win. Coach Ed Lilburne said he was incredibly proud of the effort, considering the days circumstances and the reserves that stepped up on the day and gave it their all. Notable mentions were Jack Shand, who moved from wing to centres, and put on his biggest defensive effort to date. The experience of James Harrison saw the two combine to shut down Reddies centres. Angus Know and Tom Charlton manned the wing, demonstrating a mighty effort in what was an extremely difficult day out wide. Fill in players Sam and Tray helped the forwards out - big time - with enthusiastic and damaging ball running. James Lott nursed a shoulder injury, and drove all the way from Yass to make sure the Cutters weren’t short of players. He braved a full game in the forwards. Final score: Hay Cutters defeated Wagga Reddies 15-12 (Tries: William Brown 2. Conversions: William Brown 2/3) Match Points: Anthony Toscan 3, James Harrison 2, William Brown 1. Players player Sam Hooper.

Proten Round 6 Report
Proten Round 6 Report

10 July 2025, 1:25 AM

Round 6 Report by Jamie ParsonsRankins Springs and Ivanhoe have ensured it's a three way race for top spot going into the last round with big wins on Saturday in Deniliquin. The Dragons and Roosters stay level with Barellan, with only for-and-against points separating the three. Hillston also stayed in touch with the top 4 with a win over Narrandera, while a Proten-combined team playing under Barellan (with 5 rams, 3 dragons and 2 rabbitohs including Deniliquin's Fiona Casey) won an exhibition match 28-10 over Hay.It was Goolgowi's last throw of the dice and they started off behind with Jack Glyde scoring for the Dragons after two minutes. Despite strong running they couldn't break the Dragons' line in the first half, with a Damian Walker try making it 10-0 at the break. In the second half it was the same story with Goolgowi unable to bother the scorers despite throwing everything at the defence, and two further tries to the Dragons got them their fourth straight win.Hillston were also facing elimination with a loss, and despite a scrappy first half managed to stay level with Narrandera 6-all. A scoreless twenty minutes in the second half frustrated both teams, before Hillston kicked a penalty goal to go two ahead. The Lizards got the ball back off the kick-off and scored to hit back immediately, but after several penalties led to two Narrandera players being sin-binned Hillston's Irimaia Rokotola bagged the winner for the Bluebirds and they move within two points of the Lizards on the ladder.Deniliquin finally got their chance at home after waiting 48 years and 5 rounds. It was a tough ask on the field though facing up against equal-first Ivanhoe, and despite some strong defence early the Roosters got over through Thomas Lee and Ethan Harris and never looked back. The lead blew out to 24-0 by halftime, and although Deniliquin got one back through Trevor Morgan after some nice offloading play, Ivanhoe ran up 50 points to regain first spot on the ladder, though goalkicking might cost them in the for-and-against columns after only kicking five from ten.Final ScoresRankins Springs 22 (Jack Glyde, Damian Walker, Billy Vearing, Thomas Judd tries; Damian Walker 3 goals) Goolgowi 0 Hillston 14 (Tale Delai, Irimaia Rokotola tries; Brayden Davis 2, Jed Webster 1 goals) Narrandera 10 (Jeremy Hampton, Bernie Simpson tries; Jakeem Morgan goal) Ivanhoe 50 (Thomas Lee 2, Ethan Harris 2, Lochyer Brennan, Shayne Kennedy, Clay Jones, Patty Miller, Tyrone Johnson, Orisi Rokobati tries; Jake Whyman 2, Tarelle Jones 2, Patty Miller 1 goals)Round 7 PreviewsThe defending men's premiers are the final team to host this season, with the Proten Cup's first ever Round 7. Barellan look to wrap up minor premierships in both competitions, playing the home side in the women's and Deniliquin in the men's, Ivanhoe and Rankins Springs aim for a top 2 spot while their opponents Hillston and Narrandera are aiming for fourth spot, and Hillston women's need a win to jump over Goolgowi for a finals appearance.Women's GamesIvanhoe v Hillston - 11.15amThe Bluebirds are winless this season despite some close losses while the Hens will be sure to want to lock up that Top 2 spot and get another crack at Barellan next week. A Bluebirds win will get them to fourth over Goolgowi, who have the bye. Last time they met the Hens came away with the win 38-6 in Round 4 last year.Head-to-Head: Hillston 4, Ivanhoe 1Record at Rankins Springs:Ivanhoe Won 2, Lost 1Hillston Won 2, Lost 1Rankins Springs v Barellan - 12.00pmBarellan are undefeated again this season and will need to lose big if they aren't going to be minor premiers again. Rankins Springs Dragonettes have improved again in 2025 but face their biggest test at home. They have a slim chance of slipping into second place. Ivanhoe need a win for a chance at a home final, which is a big benefit for them with their brilliant home record, while Hillston can get in the top 4 with a win and a Narrandera loss. Old rivals, Ivanhoe have dominated recent encounters, but Hillston have toughened up this season and are unlucky to be outside the Top 4 with three eight-point losses. The Proten Cup heads to Deniliquin for the first time in its history this Saturday for Round 6. By Jamie ParsonsDeniliquin will take on Ivanhoe, Hillston have their last chance for finals footy against Narrandera and old rivals Goolgowi and Rankins Springs meet. The women’s comp has another general bye, but an exhibition game will be played between Barellan Rams and Hay Magpies.Match previews:Rankins Springs v Goolgowi – 12pmThe Dragons have won three straight and need to win again to stay in the top two. Goolgowi have fallen away the last two weeks and need a big win to have any chance of finals footy this year. Last time these two met it was a close 18-6 to Rankins Springs at Goolgowi round four last year. Dragons President Brent Parsons will become the first player to play 50 Proten Cup games.Head-to-Head: Goolgowi 5, Rankins Springs 4 Hillston v Narrandera – 1.10pmHillston’s last throw of the dice to make finals, needing the win here and another win next week, while hoping Narrandera lose in round seven. The team can pull it off but will need all their defensive strength against a Lizards attack that has come alive again in the last two rounds. Last time they met Narrandera defeated Hillston at Hillston 34-12 in round five last year.Head-to-Head: Narrandera 6, Hillston 2 Deniliquin v Ivanhoe – 3.00pmThe Blueheelers finally get a chance at home after four long road trips away. Surely the time for their best team to get on the paddock, Deniliquin can only avoid the wooden spoon with a win here. Ivanhoe will be looking to raise their for-and-against a bit with the three-way tie at the top, with those F/A points possibly deciding home finals.Head-to-Head: First Meeting

Barellan Rams eye off dual minor premierships
Barellan Rams eye off dual minor premierships

30 June 2025, 5:16 AM

By Jamie ParsonsIn round five of the 2025 ProTen Cup the Ivanhoe Roosters relinquished their hold on top spot with a loss to Rankins Springs, and Barellan did enough to get the points over the home town Bluebirds, to jump into first place for the first time this season. Women’s games Premiers Barellan have surely secured another minor premiership with a 40-0 win over a short Goolgowi side. Six different try scorers featured for the Rams with Sophie Taylor scoring twice. Goolgowi borrowed four Rankins Springs players to field a team and with two byes left will be hoping Hillston won’t upset Ivanhoe in round seven so they can stay in the top four. Barellan will need to lose to Rankins Springs and Ivanhoe need to make up a 68-point for-and-against deficit to knock the Rams off top spot.Barellan 40 (Sophie Taylor 2, Madison Morris, Sophia Kelsey, Claire Stachan, Bianca Spowart, Brittany Everett tries; Monique Higgins 6 goals) Goolgowi 0In the second game Hillston were looking for the first win against Springs and started well with a try to Mel Nilsen to lead 4-0 at the break. Rankins Springs kept them out in the second half though and a couple of long range tries to Tilly Heath and Georgia West put them in front, with a possible match winning try for Hillston was called back for a forward pass.Rankins Springs 8 (Tilly Heath, Georgia West tries) Hillston 4 (Mel Nilsen try)Men’s gamesNarrandera Lizards started in the worst possible way against Goolgow,i with their winger sent off for a spear tackle in the opening minutes. Despite the one-man disadvantage, the Lizards then ran riot running in six tries to lead 32-0 with Brayden Stewart grabbing a double. Goolgowi scored one before halftime and then mounted a comeback against a tiring 12-man outfit but a late Narrandera try sealed the game.Narrandera 38 (Brayden Stewart 2, Jakeem Morgan, Barlow Simpson, Michael Salafia, Kane Simpson, Jamain Morgan tries; Jakeem Morgan 5 goals) Goolgowi 20 (Henry Taylor, Mitchell White, Jasvir Singh-Clark, Jake Clonan tries; Henry Taylor, Toby Hams goals)With a win over the Dragons, Ivanhoe could have cemented a home final but it wasn’t to be. An early try to Tyrone Johnston was equalled with a Billy Vearing try at the other end. Another try to Billy Vearing and one to Jamie Parsons after Cassidy Evans was sent off for striking, had the Dragons up 18-4 before a long-range Phillip Hunter try scored a consolation for the Roosters.Rankins Springs 18 (Billy Vearing 2, Jamie Parsons tries; Damian Walker 3 goals) Ivanhoe 10 (Tyrone Johnston, Phillip Hunter tries; Patty Miller goal)Hillston came out at home and matched Barellan blow for blow in the early stages, trailing by only two points at half time. Not long after the restart Noah Forbutt grabbed his second, but Hillston’s Connor Eade pegged one back to keep it close. Barnstorming Barellan centre Mesulame Navakayala scored to put the Rams eight ahead but in the process a Hillston player suffered a nasty knockout, putting an end to the game.Barellan 16 (Noah Forbutt 2, Mesulame Navakayala tries; Noah Forbutt 2 goals) Hillston 8 (Tale Delai, Connor Eade tries)

Around the grounds in ProTen round fiveHosts Hillston Bluebirds didn’t get a round five win, but they paid homage to the many volunteers who helped make the round and the season possible.”From line marking, organising our raffles, buttering countless rolls, making programmes, countless trips to Griffith, making rosters … the list goes on. It’s lot of background hours and it takes a lot of help to make it so successful,” the club said.At the end of the round Monique Higgins racked up seven goals and Brayden Stewart, Billy Vearing and Noah Forbutt each crossed the try line twice to score doubles.Women’s resultsBARELLAN 40 (Madi Morris, Natasha Ambrose, Soph Kelsey, Claire Strachan, Bianca Spowart, Sophie Taylor, Brittany Everett tries, Monique Higgins 7 goals) defeated GOOLGOWI 0RANKINS SPRINGS 8 (Georgia West, Tilly Heath tries) defeatedHILLSTON 4 (Mel Nilsen try)Men’s resultsNARRANDERA 38 (Brayden Stewart 2, Jakeem Morgan, Barlow Simpson, Michael Salafia, Kane Simpson, Jamain Morgan tries, Jakeem Morgan 5 goals) defeatedGOOLGOWI 20 (Henry Taylor, Mitchell White, Jasvir Singh-Clark, Jake Clonan tries, Henry Taylor & Toby Hams goals)RANKINS SPRINGS 18 (Billy Vearing 2, Jamie Parsons tries, Damian Walker 3 goals)IVANHOE 10 (Tyrone Johnson, Phillip Hunter tries, Patty Miller goal)BARELLAN 16 (Noah Forbutt 2, Mesu Navakayala tries, Noah Forbutt 2 goals)HILLSTON 8 (Tale Delai, Connor Eade tries)

By Jamie Parsons The Proten Cup heads to Hillston as we enter the second half of the season. The girls are back on board after a general bye, with Deniliquin enjoying the week off for the men’s while the Ivanhoe Hens have their second of three weeks off, with a bye between the two general byes. Barellan will look to wrap up top spot in the women’s against Goolgowi and Ivanhoe, Barellan and Rankins Springs will each be looking to go top of the ladder in the men’s. Women’s Games Goolgowi v Barellan – 12.00pmBarellan haven’t played for several weeks but have surely kept up their fitness during the break. The Goolgowi girls had a good win last start v Hillston but the Rams are a different story. Barellan will just about wrap up their third straight minor premiership with a win here. Last match-up was a big 46-0 win to the Rams in Round 2 last year.Head-to-Head: Barellan 2, Goolgowi 0.Record at Hillston: Barellan Won 2, Lost 0. Goolgowi Won 0, Lost 3. Hillston v Rankins Springs – 12.40pmDespite valiant efforts the Bluebirds girls don’t have a win to their name yet in 2025. This is likely their best opportunity and might be their last to stake a claim for the finals with only a last round game v the Hens to come. The Dragonettes will be without halfback Tiarra Hardwick and will rely on their forwards to get the win here. Their last game was a win to the Dragonettes, 14-4 in Round 6.Head-to-Head: Rankins Springs 6, Hillston 0, Drew 1.Record at Hillston: Hillston Won 1, Lost 4. Rankins Springs Won 1, Lost 3. Men’s Games Goolgowi v Narrandera – 1.40pmOld competition dominants find themselves in unfamiliar territory in 2025, both losing two games so far with Narrandera above Goolgowi on the ladder only due to Goolgowi’s lost 2 competition points. Goolgowi had good performances v Deni & Hillston and will hope a few more show up for them this week. A win here could have them jump back into the top 4. Narrandera had their best performance last week but with a 2 ½ hour trip ahead of them will also be hoping for good numbers.Head-to-Head: Goolgowi 6, Narrandera 4.Record at Hillston: Goolgowi Won 5, Lost 3. Narrandera Won 4, Lost 3. Ivanhoe v Rankins Springs – 2.50pmThe Roosters are top of the table for the first time since 2022 and look the goods so far. Their defence has been very tight only conceding 22 points in three games which if they keep up will undoubtedly be the deciding factor here. The Dragons have plenty of attacking strike and will need to be at their best to get through the Ivanhoe wall. These teams couldn’t be separated last year with draws in both Round 1 and the preliminary final.Head-to-Head: Rankins Springs 4, Ivanhoe 3, Drew 2.Record at Hillston: Ivanhoe Won 3, Lost 5. Rankins Springs Won 5, Lost 2, Drew 1. Hillston v Barellan – 4.00pmAfter a big start v Deni, Hillston have crashed back to earth with two close losses in a row. The Bluebirds need a win here to stay in touch with the Top 4. Barellan with a bye to come had all but wrapped up a finals spot and with a win could lock up a home final with only Deniliquin to come. Last time these two played it was a massive 60-6 win for the Rams in Round 1 last year.Head-to-Head: Barellan 4, Hillston 3.Record at Hillston: Hillston Won 4, Lost 4. Barellan Won 1, Lost 5, Drew 1.Deniliquin Blueheelers have the bye.

By Jamie Parsons Barellan and Rankins Springs have put one foot in the top 4, with wins over Goolgowi and Hillston, respectively, while Narrandera got on the winner’s list for the first time in 2025.After a heavily disappointing result from last week’s incident, the Rabbitohs and Bluebirds did not recover; Both sides lost two competition points, as well as two players each to suspension for the rest of the year. The Rabbitohs and Bluebirds furthered their disappointment with losses on Saturday, now likely needing to win all their remaining games to make the Top 4.The Bluebirds started the better against the Dragons, with a scrum play sending winger Tale Delai racing away to score the first, before prop Jason Cronin got one back for the Dragons. A try either side of halftime had Hillston up 16-6 but 3 tries in ten minutes to the Dragons got them back in front, with a late penalty goal sealing the result.Barellan blasted Goolgowi off the park early to lead 18-0 after only 10 minutes, with Goolgowi short on players with three Dragons and a Bluebird backing up for them. Captain Henry Taylor got over the line for Goolgowi and they held the Rams out for the rest of the half. The second half was all the Rams again, with Mesulame Navakayala scoring two, along with fullback Fred Herrmann. Barellan managed their biggest win over Goolgowi yet, 38-10.The final game began with a minute’s silence for several Narrandera community members lost over the past year, including Shaurntae Lyons, mother of several current Lizards players, including captain-coach Malek Afuamua, back on the park today after suspension. Deniliquin shocked Narrandera early after a dropped kick-off led to Jamin Jones scoring after three tackles for the Blueheellers. They wouldn’t trouble the scorers again, though, with the Lizards dominating the rest of the game, with returning fullback Caleb Atkinson scoring three tries and assisting in three more. The women’s teams had a general bye this round, as did Ivanhoe Roosters.Final ScoresRankins Springs 24 (Jason Cronin, Billy Vearing, Thomas Judd, Bart McIntyre tries; Damian Walker 4 goals) Hillston 16 (Tale Delai, Connor Eade, Ratu Ketewai tries; Jed Webster 2 goals)Barellan 38 (Mesulame Navakayala 2, Fred Herrmann 2, Noah Forbutt, Tom Bartter, Luke Farmer tries; Noah Forbutt 5 goals) Goolgowi 10 (Henry Taylor, Bodhy Martin tries; Henry Taylor 1 goal)Narrandera 46 (Caleb Atkinson 3, Jahrel Tereva 2, Jeremy Hampton, Rowan Matthews, Jamain Morgan tries; Jakeem Morgan 7 goals) Deniliquin 4 (Jamin Jones try) Ladders WOMENS WLDBForAgst+/-PtsBARELLAN2--1564526IVANHOE21--4824244RANKINS SPRINGS11-1141404GOOLGOWI12--1844-262Hillston-2-1454-502 MENS WLDBForAgst+/-PtsIVANHOE3--15822388BARELLAN31--10248546RANKINS SPRINGS21-18846426NARRANDERA12-16652144Hillston12-17832462*Goolgowi22--7256162*Deniliquin-4--12220-2080*Goolgowi and Hillston lost two competition points due to an incident in Round 3
