ProTen match reports - Goolgowi holds on for Old Boys as Ivanhoe tops the ladder

GOOLGOWI HOLD ON IN FRONT OF OLD BOYS AS IVANHOE GO TOP OF TABLE

By Jamie Parsons

Women’s Games

After a last start loss to the premiers, Ivanhoe Hens were keen to make amends this weekend against the second-placed Rankins Springs. The Dragonettes had held Goolgowi to nil last game but started off on the wrong end with Shailyn Williams scoring early. Despite getting a try back through Tilly Heath, Williams scored her second in the second half before a bad injury to Tiarra Hardwick ended the game early, the Hens finishing ahead 14-4.

Goolgowi and Hillston were both winless after two rounds and desperate to get one up with only two women’s rounds left. Goolgowi started the better with tries to MacKenzie Dowell and Tyesha Clark-Ebsworth to lead 8-0 at the break.

Fantastic defence from both sides led to a scoreless second half and the Rabbitohs got their first win since 2023.

Men’s Games

Ivanhoe and Barellan were both undefeated after two games and both hoping to go top of the ladder with a win. A dummy half try after ten minutes to Ivanhoe was offset by a strong try by Barellan prop Tom Bartter, before Ethan Harris scored outwide for the Roosters to go up 10-6 at the break. Heavy possession on Barellan’s line led to two further Roosters tries to go up 22-6 and Rams captain Noah Forbutt got one back just before fulltime.

Deniliquin ran out for their third game after two big defeats and were soon looking like conceding another after Rankins Springs scored in their first set. The Dragons scored four more tries while barely making a tackle and led at halftime 40-0. After halftime a few great runs by their big boys and a couple Ivanhoe back-ups got Deniliquin their first try through Jayesa Vasalave. A few more Dragons tries late ended the game.

Goolgowi and Hillston hadn’t played on this ground since 2018, the arch-rivals only having played 5 times since the start of the comp. Poor discipline from both sides and good defence meant only one try was scored in the first half, to Goolgowi’s Daniel Brown, along with a penalty to Toby Hams. Hams kicked another penalty in the second half but no more points would come. The Rabbitohs registering their second win, 8-0. A scuffle after the game led to another near the dressing sheds in a very poor display of sportsmanship from those involved, something we hope won’t happen again in a Proten Cup match.
