Griffith City Council is urging residents to be vigilant following reports of stolen water meters.
If your water meter has been or is ever stolen, you must report the theft to the Police and notify Council as soon as possible.
Council will arrange for a new meter to be installed promptly to minimise any disruption to your water supply.
Water theft is a serious offence under Clause 12 of the Water, Sewerage, and Drainage Regulations of the Local Government Act 1993.
Only Council staff, acting in the course of their duty, are permitted to tap a Council main.
Any unauthorised connection to Council’s water supply system is considered an illegal connection and will be reported and investigated as a suspected instance of water theft.
Council reminds the community that water is a valuable resource, and the theft or tampering of water meters impacts not only individual property owners but also the broader community.
Residents are encouraged to be alert and report any suspicious activity near water meters to the Police and Council.
For further information or to report a stolen water meter, please contact Council at 1300 176 077.
To try and prevent theft, install a meter cage to protect against theft and vehicle damage, install a durable galvanized or powder coat finish, and prevent tampering with shut off valves.
