Cash-cow for police

More than $100,000 in cash was located in a vehicle after it crashed with a cow near the Carrathool turnoff last Friday.

Officers attached to Hay Highway Patrol were made aware of a driver who had collided with a mob of cattle on the Sturt Highway east of Hay, and had failed to stop.

This caused one cow needing to be euthanised due to the extent of its injuries sustained from the collision.

Officers located the vehicle a short time later where they stopped and spoke to the driver, a 24-year-old man from South Australia.

Following enquiries police had cause to search the vehicle where they located $142,350 cash within the vehicle.

The driver was arrested and conveyed to Hay police station where he was charged with a number of offences: Driver of vehicle injuring animal fail to alleviate pain, recklessly deal with proceeds of crime and goods in custody suspected of being stolen or otherwise unlawfully obtained.

He was granted bail to appear at Hay local court on March 3.
