Hay Magpies will host Darlington Point Coleambally Roosters at Hay Park on Sunday, for round one of the Group 20 season.The new-look Magpies first grade team will be led by rookie coach Christ Stewart who has been pleased with pre-season hit outs at the West Wyalong Knockout and in matches against South City Bulls (Wagga) and Griffith Waratahs.It is expected that team lists will not be finalised until later this week, with ex-local Ben Arandt’s return to the black and white jersey hampered by injury. Hay will also be without Toby Whitehead as he serves out a period of suspension, however Kynan Headon has been performing well in the full back position.The Roosters lost Josh Veivers and Isaac Railo at the recent Yanco 9s gala day, so are expected to be unavailable for the game.Stewart is expecting big things from the return of Will Barnes to the Magpies squad, as well as senior players Simon Parr, Ben Taylor and Harley Hey and the impact of Hugh Crighton, who has been outstanding in the trials.Jessie Carter will lead both the league tag and women’s league teams, but will be calling the shots from the bench, following ACL repair. All the games across the G20 compThe 2025 Group 20 competition will commence this weekend and is set to run for 18 rounds. All eyes will head to the lake to see how the red-hot Yanco Wamoon Hawks perform on the road against Tullibigeal Lakes United. This will mark the return of Yanco-Wamoon to the first-grade competition after spending the bulk of last season playing in Reserve Grade.The Hawks took out their own 9s pre-season competition held at Leeton recently, and their new look outfit certainly caught the interest of spectators. Yanco’s Petero Taiusi is shaping up to be the Hawks secret weapon - whenever opponents threatened, Taiusi was sent in to turn the games around. He was the day’s highest try scorer, and will be a dangerous player to watch in the upcoming Group 20 season.This match will also host the women’s tackle game between the Sharks and HawksHay Magpies will host Darlington Point Roosters at Hay on Sunday and both teams will be without key players, thanks to both suspensions and injuries. Four national sport stars will be coming to Deniliquin next month, as part of a community policing event.By Zoe McMaughChief Inspector Michael Fuller said Murray River Police District is partnering with other local groups and organisations to host the sports clinic at Deniliquin Rotary Park on Saturday, April 12.It includes Deniliquin Neighbourhood Watch instigator and soccer coach Diego Sztejman, long-time rugby union advocate Tim Strong, Pastor Keith Waters from Ignite Life Church, and Pastor Mark Horan from the Sydney-based Impact Team.The guest sport stars come from the worlds of soccer, boxing and rugby.“We wanted to create an opportunity for conversation with young people and adults through sport, and the opportunity for them to hear from sporting legends who have faced challenges in their own lives as well as playing at the highest level,” Chief Insp Fuller said.“If it breaks down barriers with police, and gives people some things to consider as they make better choices, that’s the outcome we want. “We recognise there is a need for a conversation about youth and the support they need, and hope this event is an opportunity for further discussion and connection building between community, agencies and young people.”The guest stars secured for Deniliquin are:Charlie Tonga A former National Rugby League player for Canterbury and the Sydney Roosters. Also coached and represented Tonga in rugby.Gerry Gomez A former Australia’s National Soccer League player for Sydney City, Marconi, APIA-Leichhardt and Parramatta Eagles. He also represented the Australian B Socceroos in the 1985 world series club tournament.Solomon Haumono A former professional heavyweight division boxer who competed from 2004 to 2019 with a professional record of 24 wins (21 by knockout) and four losses. He also played successfully in the NRL and represented Tonga.Makayla Manu A Southern Districts rugby player who has played in the rugby 15s, 10s and 7s, represented the Sydney Roosters in the U19 2021 Tasha Gale Squad and had the privilege of being a part of the AUS 7 emerging squad.“Come along, meet some new people, learn some new skills and maybe even tackle the police in conversation or on the field,” Chief Insp Fuller said.“The day will kick off, literally, from 9am with soccer and rugby clinics.“It will be followed by a free barbecue lunch at Rotary Park about 12.30pm.“If you can’t make the sports event, the four visiting sporting legends will be speaking at the Ignite Life Church, at 249 Finley Rd, from 6pm that night.”

Yanco Wamoon Hawks hosted a rugby league 9s competition on Saturday at the Leeton sportsground.The hungry home side matched it with Young Cherrypickers in the men’s grand final, after a close win over Yenda Blueheelers.Young earned their spot after blitzing Griffith Black & Whites in the semi-final, defeating the Griffith side 20 points to six.Yanco attacked the Young defensive line from the kick-off, however the Cherrypickers held them out and launched their own attack at the opposite end of the field.Handling errors in the wet and slippery conditions hampered Young’s efforts, and instead Yanco scored first points when Caleb Atkinson found a gap and ran straight through Young’s defence. In a match where every point counted the vital conversion points were also added, one of the handful of successful drop punts for the entire day.Nicolas Canellis for Young scored next, through another defensive gap and at half-time the score stood at 6-4, with the home side holding the narrow lead.From the restart Yanco attacked, pushing the Cherrypickers winger from the field to regain possession, but were unable to capitalise. Young aimed for the tryline but once again the slippery conditions allowed Yanco to drag players from the field, in try-saving efforts.Yanco upped the pressure and peppered Young’s line until powerful forward and 2025 first grade coach Tomoci “Jim” Ratulozo crossed.Not to be outdone, the Cherrypickers passed the ball along the line to find a gap and hit back with their own try soon after, to again come within two points of the Hawks.Arguably Yanco’s player of the day Petero Taitusi capped off a stellar performance and crossed in the dying minutes of the match to seal the Hawks 16 to 10 win.Taiusi is shaping up to be the Hawks secret weapon - whenever opponents threatened, Taiusi was sent in to turn the games around. He was the day’s highest try scorer, and will be a dangerous player to watch in the upcoming Group 20 season.The women’s grand final was played out between the Ivanhoe Roosters and Cobar Roosters.Despite defeating Cobar earlier in the day, and heading into the game as favourites, Ivanhoe’s forwards fatigued early and errors crept in. Cherokee Dixon’s defense was in top form and Ivanhoe scored first, in a match full of big hits and powerful runs.Ros Evans and Monique Higgins led the way, pushing off Cobar defenders to gain every inch.Cobar scored two second half tries to take the lead, which was all that was needed in such a tight game, and took the win eight points to four.Follow Back Country Bulletin on Facebook, to see action photos later this week.During the day Darlington Point Coleambally lost two player - Josh Veivers and Isaac Railo to the bin, and Yenda’s Saul Railo was also marched, after striking an opposition player. Drew Lloyd (pictured) is kicking goals, literally.A beloved local boy and mainstay of the Balranald Roos, Drew has made his presence felt.Throughout the entirety of his football career to sate, Drew has racked up some impressive stats.He has played 247games, 238 total goals and been voted Best Player 108 times.The talented forward has made a name for himself with his elite skills, goal-kicking ability, and sharp footy sense and judgement. His great presence has earned him a spot at VFL club Port Melbourne, with him choosing Rochester as his home club.If there could be anything more important than footy however, it could possibly be Drew’s humble nature and love of his home town.This love is reciprocated, with Balranald cheering Drew on regardless if he is wearing the Roos blue and white or another team’s colours.“I spoke to one of the Balranald coaches and they were very encouraging,” 22-year-old Drew said. “They told me to go for it, saying I have the talent and need to do these things while you’re young.”A couple of clubs in the region had expressed interest in Drew coming on board, and asked Drew what he wanted, what his aspirations were. Expressing his desire to reach state level, one of the clubs mentioned their connections, and before he knew it, he had a two-week trial with Port Melbourne. After the trial he was given a 12-month contract. He is understandably over the moon with this. “Hopefully I will be able to put my best foot forward and keep working towards the big leagues,” said Drew, forever humble.Drew’s biggest supporters have to be his family. Grandmother Linda Nelson follows every move Drew makes, and he is in constant contact with his family. He is in Melbourne, having keenly hit the ground running to secure employment, and get into a good work life football balancing routine.“I worked for the Canally Almond Farm for four years or so, and they were also very encouraging, telling me to go for it while I am young. That is the best advice I could give to any person in my shoes, or thinking about making a big change or taking a risk; do it. At least you’ll have done it, instead of regretting it later.”Congratulations Drew you are so inspiring! Not only do you have the talent to make it big, you have defined your dreams and are doggedly pursuing them.The worst thing about not taking a chance is always wondering what could have been.I just hope Drew remembers he said I could chat to him again as he makes it further and further up the ladder.

Hay Magpies hosted Griffith Waratahs Tigers at Hay Park on Saturday, for a trial match and season launch for the Group 20 rugby league season.The Tigers were underwhelming I the first two quarters and earlier in the week Magpies officials feared they would not be able to man a side for the trip to Hay.Despite that the game was played at high intensity as both teams tested combinations and match fitness in the steamy conditions. Waratahs lost a player for ten minutes after a high shot and Hay capitalised sending Billy Fixter across the line wide on the left side. Without Ben Taylor, who was being rested, veteran Harley Hey added conversion points.Hay repeated the left side attack when Hugh Crighton scored and at the half time break Hay led 10 nil on the back of good forward progression by the Magpies and frustrating handling errors by the ‘Tahs.Rex Malanicagi shook off Tigers defenders and raced the length of the field to score Hay’s third unanswered try and crowd favourite John Weymouth booted the goal.Hay switched up its side at three-quarter time and gave the Griffith side the opportunity to score four quick tries, using their forwards to muscle across the line.In the final quarter Hay re-grouped and used their line speed to post one final try, when Weymouth crossed.Coach Chris Stewart said the trial held many positives.“For us it was a positive result,” he said.“We played our available full-strength side for the first half, and led three tries to nil at half-time.“We then made some changes and they caught up and the game ended four tries each, yet we still have six first graders to come back into yesterday’s side. Stewart named Kynan Headon, Hugh Crighton and Will Barnes as his top three players. “Our effort in defence was great, but still need to cut the silly penalties and drop ball out,” he said.The Waratahs did not field a side for the scheduled league tag match, so the Magpies seniors and under 16s teams combined to play out a scratch match.The depth of talent and sheer numbers in the under 16s side bodes well for the future of women’s teams for Hay. Emily Shea and Lily Plum shone in attack.The senior side has welcomed Lani Houston into the squad and her natural ability and level of fitness will make her a valuable asset for the season. Noa Magliocchetti debuted for Hay and Ellie Darlow returned from maternity leave. During the match Monica Andrews and Lily Weymouth directed play well, lending their experience to the younger players.The Club launched the season with a gathering after the games, where 2025 tean captains were announced. Toby Crighton and Chris Stewart will lead the first grade squad, Lily Huntly the women’s tackle and tag teams and Zane Gash the reserve grade squad.

Deniliquin will field a rugby league team for the first time in 48 yearsBy Jamie Parsons The Deniliquin Blueheelers will return to regular competition football for the first time in 48 years in 2025 after confirmation their men’s team had reached the required registrations before the end of February. After a short-lived revival in the early 90s as the Deniliquin Raiders in the Goulburn Murray League, the Blueheelers will return to the revived Group 17 competition where they first competed, winning three straight first grade competitions from 1969-71 before folding in 1977.The Proten Cup officially welcomed Deniliquin to the competition last week. Their men’s side will play in the 7-team draw, hosting Round 6 on the 5th July where they will play Ivanhoe. Their first game will be against Hillston in Ivanhoe, May 24th. Unfortunately the women’s team was unable to meet the requirements, though several interested players from Deniliquin may still turn out for other clubs.Congratulations has to be extended to Deniliquin President Kurt Longford for his hard work in creating the club again from scratch, and condolences to Kurt and the club on the recent loss of Kurt’s mother and club secretary Pauline Longford. PROTEN CUP DRAW REVEALEDWith the confirmation of Deniliquin’s involvement, the official Proten Cup draw has been revealed. Goolgowi and Rankins Spring will meet Yenda and Forbes in pre-season matches in memory of Billy Hale and Dane Richards.By Jamie ParsonsThe Goolgowi and Rankins Springs clubs have announced their first trials to take place on Saturday April 5 at Goolgowi. Goolgowi have revived the Billy Hale Memorial against Yenda for the third time, after games in 2021 and 2023. Billy Hale, son of Proten Cup founder Geoff Hale and Donna Hale, played Group 20 football for Yenda including an U18s premiership in 2016, and was part of the inaugural Goolgowi Proten Cup side, winning the premiership with them in 2019. Yenda has won both the previous clashes between the two sides.On the same day Rankins Springs will play Forbes in honour of Dragons local Dane Richards, son of Brad Richards and Lesley Richards. Dane played junior footy for Yenda and Forbes, where he attended high school, and made his Dragons debut in 2023. Dane’s brother Josh and cousin Sam both play for Rankins Springs currently.Both Billy and Dane were lost to suicide; Billy in 2020 and Dane in 2023. With such small rural communities, the loss of a young son hits many and hits hard, with Billy and Dane's family and friends still feeling the effects years later. Charity and support groups Wellways, Standby and Man Cave will be on hand to promote mental health awareness and support for those still hurting from the effects of suicide. The day is also planned to have a women’s game between Yenda and Goolgowi to kick-off at 12.30pm, followed by the Dane Richards Memorial at 1.30pm and the Billy Hale Memorial at 3.00pm. Wellways is planning a presentation along with breakfast at 9.30am.Yenda and Goolgowi's jerseys will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the mental health charities. At the last Billy Hale Memorial held in 2023, the auction raised $22,074 in honour of Billy. The fledgling club has been officially invited into the ProTen competitionProTen Cup president Brad Lawrence has officially invited the Deniliquin Blueheelers men’s side to join the 2025 competition.In order to permitted into the competition, the Blueheelers were required to reach a certain number of registrations, which Deniliquin president Kurt Longford says they have reached.“We have some good news for Deni Blueheelers,” Mr Longford told Back Country Bulletin.“We have been officially approved to have our men’s team into ProTen Cup, as we have enough registrations.”The club has rallied players, sponsors and committee members to revive the Club, which has been in recess since 1977. Despite the tidal wave of support from the AFL dominated town, the club has shelved plans for a women’s rugby league team.“We have put our women’s team on hold until next year, due to not enough registrations,” Mr Longford explained.As well as holding the position of president Mr Longford will co-coach the 2025 squad, alongside Drew Hinkley.

The Roosters have already had many players commit, including club captains Ethan Whyman and Shailyn Williams and, along with the rumoured return of hometown NRL player Joel Thompson, Ivanhoe look in prime position to chase that long awaited premiership in 2025. Ivanhoe began training on the 8th February. Craig Toole has come on as women’s coach and it will be no surprise if they dominate once again in 2025. New men’s coach and vice-president Tommy Brettschneider has taken on a lot of responsibility and has been very active in the pre-season. The Blueheelers have recently announced their coaches, bringing in Drew Hinkley and President Kurt Longford to lead the men’s side and Warren Annetts to lead the women. As part of their admittance to the competition, Deniliquin need players registered for both their sides by the end of this month, at which point the competition committee will meet again. For all the work put in for Deni to get back on the park, hopefully the players come through for them.
