Under the plan, cheques cannot be issued in Australia after 30 June 2028 and will not be accepted by financial institutions or as a form of payment after 30 September 2029.
However, many major financial institutions have already ceased the use of cheques, meaning businesses could be caught short if they accept them.
Rabobank stopped processing cheques in May 2024 and Macquarie Bank in October 2024.
If a cheque from either of these institutions is accepted as payment, it cannot be deposited at any bank in Australia, and neither bank will process cheques from other institutions.
Since June 2023, Commonwealth Bank has removed cheque facilities from new accounts, and Bendigo Bank no longer issues cheque books on any new or existing accounts.
According to the Australian Banking Association the use of cheques has dropped almost 90 per cent in the past decade.
