Electrofishing Efforts Boost Native Fish Populations in Billabong Creek

YACTAC targets carp removal to support a thriving ecosystem and restock native species

Watch out for the electrofishing boat and team targeting carp on Friday, January 17, at Billabong Creek, Conargo.

The YACTAC (Yanco Creek and Tributaries Advisory Council) team will conduct four stints of electrofishing targeting carp over the next few months and proceeds from the carp will go to a native fish restocking program.

Dr John Conallin will also be out monitoring native fish.

This project is a continuation of YACTAC’s Refreshing Rivers ROAR project.

In 2023-2024, 737kg of carp was removed from a five-kilometre stretch.

During that timeframe, the project also released 27,000 golden perch fingerlings along from Wanganella to Jerilderie, released 240 endangered eel-tailed catfish fingerlings, planted 300m wetland plants on Billabong Ck, Conargo, and conducted ongoing fish and habitat monitoring.

More planting, monitoring, electrofishing, and eel-tailed catfish release are planned for the coming months. The local schools have been crucial for our planting success.
