Early start to algal blooms for Wilcannia township

WaterNSW has issued a number of blue-green algal alerts for an area of the Darling River upstream of the Menindee Lakes, which includes Wilcannia.

Water NSW advises that although Wilcannia is fitted with dual-reticulated water supply and residents should be mindful that untreated water taps that source water directly from the river will also be affected.

Social media commentators are keeping any eye on the river at Wilcannia, after locals endured catastrophic fish kill evenmts last year.

"Before cotton there was never any BG Algae at the Menindee area, even back when the river went into water holes when it stopped running," one said.

"It’s not right. Why do we have to put up with the foul water?" said another.

The red alert warning applies only to untreated water and will remain in place until monitoring and test results confirm the risk is sufficiently diminished.
