On-Call Firefighters (OCFF) provide emergency response to fires, accidents, rescues and other incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. While not rostered full-time, OCFFs declare their availability a week in advance, allowing them to balance primary jobs and family commitments.
In 2024/2025, Balranald Fire Station responded to 47 calls, with 22 per cent occurring during business hours Monday to Friday, averaging approximately 10 calls per year during these hours. Average call duration was one hour and 37 minutes.
The role offers a fortnightly retainer plus hourly pay for incidents, training, drills and community events, with leave entitlements and extensive training in emergency life support, teamwork and leadership skills.
