Administrator's Term Extended as Central Darling Council Awaits Election Details

The period of administration for Central Darling Shire Council has been extended until September.

This extension is due to legislative requirements concerning regulations and notice of meetings for the upcoming council elections.

The administrator reported that discussions with the Office of Local Government are underway to establish a timetable for these elections.

This timetable must include the signing of regulations, their presentation to parliament for a specified period, and a subsequent three-month notice period for the election.

As a result, the exact timing of the election remains uncertain.

Central Darling Shire has been under administration since 2013 due to significant financial and governance issues.

It covers an area of Western NSW the size of Tasmania, including Ivanhoe, Menindee and Wilcannia.

The population is about 2,000 people.

Central Darling’s issues have been exacerbated by this combination of size and low population density.
