P Platers over 25 allowed to access GPS on phones while driving

A bill passed the NSW upper house that would allow provisional drivers over 25 years old to use their phone's GPS while driving.

The phone must be mounted to the vehicle and used solely as a GPS navigational aid.

The driver cannot touch the phone while the vehicle is moving or stationary but not parked.

The bill was introduced to improve safety for all road users by allowing provisional drivers to access GPS functionality on their phones.

The bill does not apply to provisional drivers under 25 because brain development is not complete until the mid-twenties.

The provision will be repealed 12 months after commencement.

Provisional drivers are not permitted to use their phones while driving in other ways, such as sending text messages or using the phone in hands-free mode with the loudspeaker on.

The only exceptions are to show a Digital Driver Licence to police or to use wallet functions when stopped in a road-related area.
