The Mobile Network Hardening Program (MNHP) has returned for Round 3, offering a lifeline to strengthen mobile network infrastructure in disaster-prone areas.
The timing is perfect for those suffering with the recent power outages in the Far West, caused by storm damage to Transgrid powerlines, highlighted the urgent need for resilient telecommunications.
Telstra and Optus successfully secured funding in the previous round to upgrade sites in the Parkes electorate.
While up to $20 million is available for co-funding projects with mobile carriers and tower companies, this round is divided into two streams. This means less funding for regional, remote, and very remote areas, as $10 million is allocated to peri-urban fringes. "This means less money on offer for regional areas – yet another example of Labor taking from the regions to give to peri-urban areas close to major cities." says Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton.
