Court: Broken Hill man pleads guilty to shocking animal cruelty

A 20-year-old man named Jet Jai Johnson from Broken Hill has pled guilty to five counts of animal cruelty.

The charges stemmed from videos posted on social media showing acts of cruelty against livestock and native animals, including kicking a goat kid and attacking a kangaroo.

Despite pleading guilty, his defence team plans to apply for the charges to be dismissed under Section 14 of the Mental Health and Cognitive Impairment Forensic Provisions Act 2020.

This application would allow him to avoid criminal conviction based on potential mental health or cognitive impairment issues.

The final decision will depend on a sentencing assessment report from the Broken Hill Community Corrections District Office.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 30.
