The Riverine Grazier and Back Country Bulletin are seeking two young people to join our 'Know Your Neighbour' program. This is an exciting opportunity to tell the stories of your community while developing journalism and content creation skills.


No experience necessary – we provide all training and mentoring support!


Location: Hay, Balranald, Carrathool or Central Darling Shire Council areas

Age Requirement: 12-24 years

Compensation: $150 per participant

Application Deadline: Thursday, 22 August

About the Role

The Riverine Grazier and Back Country Bulletin are seeking two young people to join our 'Know Your Neighbour' program. This is an exciting opportunity to tell the stories of your community while developing journalism and content creation skills.

No experience necessary – we provide all training and mentoring support!


What You'll Do

  • Interview people in your community
  • Create three short digital stories combining video and written content
  • Work with an experienced mentor from our newsroom
  • Have your work published in print and online in December


Program Timeline:

September: Meet your newsroom team and mentor


October Training: Four mandatory online sessions (4:30–6pm Wednesdays)

  • 1 Oct: What is journalism?
  • 8 Oct: Writing for news + social media
  • 15 Oct: Interview skills + mobile journalism
  • 22 Oct: Editing + storytelling

Training delivered by Anita Anabel from Community Media Training Organisation (formerly POPSUGAR and Media Week Australia)


November: Content creation with mentor support


December: Publication in The Grazier and Back Country Bulletin digital app


What We Offer

  • Free professional journalism and content creation training
  • One-on-one mentoring from local editor or journalist
  • $150 payment for completed work
  • Published byline in established regional publications
  • Skills development for future career opportunities


Requirements

  • Age 12-24 years
  • Resident of Hay, Balranald, Carrathool or Central Darling Shire Council areas
  • Available for all four Wednesday afternoon training sessions in October
  • Enthusiasm for storytelling and community connection

Know Your Neighbour is supported by the NSW Premier's Department to build social cohesion and amplify diverse voices across our multicultural region.

  • No private meetings – all sessions conducted in public spaces or online
